Victory Through Song

paul-and-silas-in-prison

Have you ever considered the power of song to turn a place of seeming defeat into a place of victory, to turn a dry barren place into a fertile field, and to bring the light of hope into the midst of darkness and gloom? This is exactly where Paul and Silas find themselves (Acts 16:16-34) after setting a girl free from demon powers in the name of Jesus; illegally arrested, beaten, thrown into prison, and fastened in the stocks (a very uncomfortable position), yet at midnight they prayed and sang praises to God while the other prisoners were listening; and guess what, God was listening too! Someone described it that God got to tapping His foot with the music and He tapped so hard that the prison shook, the doors were opened, and the chains fell off. Before the night was over the prison keeper and his household were converted and baptized! You cannot separate their song of praise and this supernatural encounter. Today praise can still cause chains of bondage and captivity to fall off, bringing glorious triumph. Psalm 42:8 “The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me.” Yes, not only is He with us when everything is bright, but His song brings joy in difficult times. In Psalm 77:6 the Psalmist says, “I call to remembrance my song in the night…” And the Apostle Paul says we should be “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” Colossians 3:16. And Isaiah 42:10 “Sing unto the Lord a new song, And His praise from the ends of the earth…” Both Jew and Gentile, for “The Lord is great and greatly to be praised…” Psalm 96:4.

The Power Of Song

-By Rose Hill

(Taken from Psalm 30:5; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 105:1-3; Revelation 14:3)

When there is within your heart the power of song,

The devil surely can’t defeat you for very long.

When you’re feeling bad and O so sick,

What a blessing it is to hear good music.

It’s the Lord who gives song and strength,

We must exalt and praise Him at length.

Sometimes we are weeping in the night,

But in the morning He makes all things right.

The power of song will give gladness of heart,

And we will rejoice with a brand-new start.

We will sing psalms, spiritual songs and hymns,

For he who does has the victory and wins.

And in heaven someday we will sing at the throne,

The new song that the Lord will give His own.
