The Reliability Of God’s Promises

Hebrews 6:13-20 points to “two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie …” (verse 18). These two unchangeable pillars are His covenant and His oath. His covenant is His promise, specifically to Abraham in Genesis 22:16-18, and generally to all who will receive it, “For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him amen, to the glory of God through us” (2 Corinthians 1:20). A covenant is a binding agreement, and God has bound Himself to fulfill His word. But He even takes it a step farther than that, confirming (guaranteeing) “it by an oath” (verse 17). An oath is accepted by men, as verse 16 so aptly points out, saying, “an oath for confirmation is for them an end for all dispute” and “because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself” (verse 13 and also see Genesis 22:16). In Jeremiah 1:11-12, God gives the prophet a vision of an almond tree, which is considered the “waker” in Hebrew thinking because of its early blossoming (as though it was diligently watching for the first occasion to bloom in spring) likening it to His word that He is carefully watching over, being alert, sleepless, and on the lookout to perform. Be assured that He will fulfill His promises; all we are required to do is to “log on” (meet the conditions)!

God’s Promise Is Sure

-By Rose Hill

God made a promise and it is sure,

And forever and ever it will endure.

He will not break a promise He made,

But hold to all the plans He had laid.

That if we grow in faith and on Him we lean,

Then His power and wisdom in us is seen.

We have a hope that is sure and steadfast,

An anchor for the soul that will forever last.

Our inheritance in heaven will never decay,

It will be reserved for us until the day.

When what we hope for becomes sight,

And God will make all things right.
