The Soul

“My soul clings to the dust” (Psalm 119:25); from the Hebrew definition we learn that the soul is a “breathing creature”. The Amplified Bible reads, “My earthly life cleaves to the dust” and in the physical world this could apply to all that are born into it passing away in death. But there is also a deeper message here, the soul being the part of man that manifests the will, emotions, and feelings; that dwells between the spirit and the body; an order, expressed by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, and it will align with that from which it receives its source. Being born into the natural world, it pursues the things of the flesh and the surrounding world; as the Psalm says, it “clings to the dust”, the body and fleshly lusts. However, deep inside, the spirit man longs for something more, and we read in Ecclesiastes 3:11 from the Amplified Bible, “He also has planted eternity in men’s heart and mind…” We were created for eternity and with an inner cry for fellowship with God and His abundance. But because of our fallen nature we are bent to feed our soul with the “dust” which cannot satisfy. Recognizing this, the Psalmist prays, “Remove from me the way of lying…” (the way of untruth or sham, or perhaps we could say hypocrisy or deceit). This could manifest in trying to make others believe we are satisfied and content when really we are not; or as is so often the case, being deceived ourselves, “blinded” by “the god of this age…” 2( Corinthians 4:4) into continually pursuing “the dust”. That inner cry can only be satisfied as with the Psalmist in 119:25-32, when we feed our soul with the “food” of the spirit, crying out for the ways of God, His word, His statutes, His precepts, His testimonies, and His commandments, for we were created for something higher than “the dust”, and only as we step into it will we find completion!

 A Prayer To The Lord

-By Rose Hill

To You, O Lord my heart cries out,

I need You so without a doubt.

Consistently now for You I seek,

My earthly life is O so weak.

To Your word I will take heed,

To be refreshed is my great need.

Teach me to understand Your way,

My soul cries out to You today.
