A tribute to Grandma and Grandpa

Our thoughts this week are focused on grandparents, and the role they play in the lives of grandchildren. While the word “grandparents” is not used in the King James Version of the Bible, the thought of grandparents and their role in family definitely is portrayed. “Children’s children” (cf. Psalm 103:17) is a term that is used in the Bible, and one time grandmother is used. While not specifying grandparents, Proverbs 16:31 points to the beauty of old age, and I believe sets the standard for those who are grandparents as well as those who are not: “The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, If it is found in the way of righteousness.” Psalm 103:17 says, “But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children.” The teaching of, and the righteous ways of God, being passed down from generation to generation, produces the beauty of His righteousness within families. It was first Timothy’s grandmother that passed the faith down to his mother, and together they instilled it in young Timothy, 2 Timothy 1:5. While parents have the immediate role of instructing their children by both word and lifestyle, the role of grandparents is equally important. Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children…” We look at this from a material standpoint, and where it is possible, rightfully so; however, a more important inheritance is that of a Godly lifestyle, and teaching that leads to holy living and eternal life. What kind of inheritance are you leaving for your grandchildren?

Grandma and Grandpa

-By Rose Hill

Grandma and grandpa lived many years,

They have been through much happiness and tears.

From what they have learned they have taught us much,

And they always did have such a special touch.

It’s always fun to sit at their table,

To tell us of times past they sure are able.

Yes, and grandma’s food is ever so good,

And grandpa tells her so, the way he should.

They have taught us there are answers to prayer,

And that when we need God He is always there.

There is such beauty in their silvery hair,

And with us a special love they do share.

I know when life’s hard and things don’t go right,

Grandma and grandpa are praying at night.

For their faith is so strong they know God will hear,

And bring help to all of their grandchildren dear.
