A Living Fountain

In Jeremiah 2:13 God portrays Himself as “The fountain of living waters”. The problem is that the people to whom He is speaking have “hewn out for themselves cisterns – broken cisterns that can hold no water.” People still do this today; I ask you, have you tried everything this world placed before you trying to find satisfaction, peace, contentment, and refreshing, only to find that its dazzle was no more than a “mirage in the desert”, or a broken cistern that can’t hold water? In Isaiah 55:1 God says, “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters…” And in Revelation 21:6 He invites all that are thirsty saying, “I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.” The source of this loving water is Jesus: in John 4 He is talking to a woman who like many today tried to find the satisfying fountain by doing the same failed things over and over again only to find the same disappointing results. Jesus told her if she would just ask Him He would give her living water, a “fountain springing up into everlasting life.” That is a continuous flow, not just a momentary gratification which is the most the others can offer. Then in John 7:37 Jesus also issued this invitation, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” And in Revelation 22:17 the invitation goes out “Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” Yes, there is a true “fountain of youth” where you can be renewed, restored, and find continuing joy and satisfaction; it is in Jesus alone.

Jesus

By Rose Hill (edited)

Jesus You are a lovely living fountain,

With refreshing streams from Calvary’s mountain.

Jesus You are the wonderful gift,

The one the Father is giving.

When we are thirsty we come to You,

And drink of the water that’s living.
