“As he thinks in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7. From this verse we see that words can be deceitful, as the surrounding text bears out. There are those who have a deceitful tongue and speak with a lying mouth according to Psalm 109:2. Thoughts and words are closely connected, (even those whose words are deceitful are fashioning them from a heart that is thinking evil, speaking opposite of truth) Proverbs 18:21 says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” To speak God’s perspective is to speak life into and over life’s issues; to speak with complaint and negatively is to speak the enemies’ goal of defeat into them! Care must be taken to plant the right seed into our heart, the seed of God’s word, so that our tongue will speak truth and life “For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” Luke 6:45. Words spoken by the tongue can be deceptive; in Isaiah 29:13 God speaks of people who “draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me.” How can such things be? “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9. So it becomes a heart issue even more than a words issue. Our prayer with David in Psalm 139:23 should be “Search me O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxieties (Hebrew cogitation).”
Great Thoughts
-By Rose Hill
I thought some mighty great thoughts today,
First I thought about Jesus who is the way.
And how He has led me up until now,
He brought me through much, I don’t know how.
I thought of the great things God did for me,
How He saved me from sin and set me free.
And when I was feeling oh so sick,
He healed my body mighty quick.
I thought some great thoughts about what to do,
To make someone happy, it might be you.
I thought that with God’s help I even could write,
Something to cheer you in the night.
I thought about how I could pray for the lost,
And do God’s work at any cost.
I thought about how we work together as one,
In unity we are getting the Lord’s work done.
I thought about what we all could become,
As we are letting God work through us some.
So when it will be the end of the day,
“They did great things” someone will say.
