We read in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword …” and this tells us that the word of God is energetic, active, effective, and working. It is something that is said – the thought, topic, reasoning, motive, and expression – specifically the divine expression of God, which is Christ; the Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God” (John 1:1).
In order to fully experience and understand the power of God’s word, we must come to know its author personally. In running this spiritual race, the Bible tells us we must do so “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Looking means to consider attentively or give undivided attention to, looking away from all distractions. Since He is the originator of our faith He is also its perfecter.
In Jeremiah 31:31-34, the heart of his prophecy is that of knowing the Lord, who under the New Covenant would write His law in the hearts and minds, as opposed to just an external and mental knowledge of a written script. This is when we really get to know the Lord and experience the power of His word.
When we live in Christ and He in us (Galatians 2:20), spending time with Him, just like spending extended time with a friend or relative we come to recognize their voice, so when we “hang out” with Jesus we learn to know His voice and follow Him (John 10:4, 14, 27). Yes in following Him we not only hear Him but we also begin to acquire His characteristics, acting and speaking like Him. It is here that we experience the Power of God’s word as its author lives and works in and through us.
