Humility is an attitude of the heart; it is not self-condemnation, rather it views self as being insufficient in its own strength, as Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:5 “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves, to think anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God.” Pride says “I have attained this”; “I have accomplished this”, Etc. Humility says “it is God working in me and through me, and to Him be all the glory!” Meekness is closely aligned with humility in the original languages of Scripture; in fact the same word translated meekness is often translated or implies humility. Moses was known as the meekest man on the earth (Numbers 12:3) yet anyone that follows his life will have to recognize that he was a powerful man in his accomplishments for God. Jesus Himself was meek and lowly (Matthew 11:29) and the Bible says He humbled Himself and became obedient…” Philippians 2:8. Meekness (with its cousin humility) “is not weakness, but is power under perfect control.” (SFLB) Humility is not saying “I’m a nothing”, instead it says “I am material in the hands of the builder”, and remembers “He who built the house has more honor than the house” Hebrews 3:3. We see a great illustration of humility in Acts 3:6-16 where Peter says “…why look so intently at us…His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong…” See also Proverbs 3:34; James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5-6.
Humility
By Rose Hill
God gives favor to those who are humble,
But those who are proud may take a great tumble.
Just like Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall,
They are surely to take a mighty great fall.
So clothe yourself with humility,
And the grace and blessings of God you will see.
When you’re humble you’ll find God’s perfect will,
And with His power in you He will fill.
Be humble and God will answer your prayers,
Then you’ll find you are in His presence there.
