Ephesians is a powerful book revealing the mystery of the church, giving us insight into our position in, and our walk with, Christ. In 1:17-23 the Apostle’s prayer is for God to give “the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Christ) the eyes of your understanding being enlightened…” that is the eyes of your heart, your inner eyes. God’s will for us is to develop practical understanding of His working in us, and His will for us, the veil being removed from our heart so we can receive the insight of His word and it’s intended work in us through revelation of the law and the prophets of the Old Testament as revealed in the New, see 2 Corinthians 3:13-18. It is His will for us to “know…the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints…” There is a sense in which we are God’s inheritance through Christ, but the tenor here is that it is the inheritance we receive from Him the Apostle is speaking about, see verse 11. As Adam Clarke says, “…the glorious abundance of the spiritual things to which you are entitled, in consequence of being made children of God;” This glorious inheritance does not end with this life, but only begins here; Paul says “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most pitiable” 1 Corinthians 15:9; and in Romans 8:17 “if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” Both now and eternally!
My glorious inheritance
By Rose Hill
In the Lord’s way I will delight,
And walk in the path He says is right.
On His faithfulness I will feed,
And trust He will meet my every need.
And if I fall His promise is sure,
He will pick me up and help me endure.
Oh to know His great power divine,
And the glorious inheritance that will be mine.
Some day I’ll see Him face to face,
And rejoice in His saving grace.
I want the eyes of my heart flooded with light,
So that I may understand His power and might.
