In Matthew 13:44-46 Jesus gives us two examples in parable illustrating the superior value of the kingdom of heaven. In verse 44 He likens “the kingdom of heaven (to) treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” By going back to verse 38 we learn in the parable of the tares that “The field is the world”. Here we see that the treasure is not the field, but is hidden in the field. We recognize there can be two interpretations from these verses, in the one Jesus sees us as the treasure and leaves His heavenly wealth to come and purchase us. But it is the other that I am looking at today, in which we see the Lord Jesus Christ “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” Colossians 2:3, bringing these into this world, hidden in his veil of flesh, “He was in the world…and the world did not know Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” John 1:11-12. When you find the treasure of His presence, His joy, His satisfaction, His peace, His living hope, the things you considered of value and craved desiring to find fulfillment in them, whether sinful and carnal activities or religious forms, they are revealed to be as they are, useless, and with Apostle Paul we say I “count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ…that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection” Philippians 3:8, 10. Yes selling all to obtain His hidden treasure. Psalm 34:8 invites us to “taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed (or happy) is the man who trusts in Him.”
Hidden treasure
By Rose Hill
There is a hidden treasure Jesus said,
Many people have not about it read.
It is like a treasure hidden in a field,
And it is Jesus Himself, the one to whom we yield.
In His presence is peace and hope,
And with our problems He helps us cope.
He is everything that in the word we read,
He sure is a wonderful treasure indeed.
