In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus taught His disciples – and He teaches us – not to worry about life’s needs. To be certain He is not teaching a Christian welfare state where His followers do not work and just expect everything to be handed to them; indeed the Bible teaches the exact opposite, “…if anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” 2 Thessalonians 3:10; cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:11. Yes there are times when circumstances place one in need and we who are able are taught to come to their aid, see Ephesians 4:28. The word worry (“take no thought” KJV.) that we are looking at in the Greek of the New Testament conveys the thought of being preoccupied with things that distract us, and cause anxiety, stress, and pressure. These in turn will detract us from having a single hearted devotion to God. In verse 33 He said “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. In Luke 21:34 Jesus cautioned against being weighed down with, among other things, “cares of this life” and in the following verses indicates they can render us unprepared for His coming and kingdom! Lord give us the spirit of Mary in Luke 10:38-42.
Faith Not Worry

I won’t let worry take control,
For God gives me peace within my soul.
By thinking about it I can’t get taller,
Or by worrying about it get any smaller.
And why should I fuss about what I will wear,
When God even knows the count of my hair.
God knows how to clothe the flowers of the field,
So I will all of my life to Him yield.
Even the fowls of the air He doth feed,
So I’m sure He will take care of my need.
In spite of all the things that get in my way,
I’ll put them aside and seek God’s kingdom today.
