Have you been in a place where you feel like your heart is overwhelmed with the things around you, with the cares and pressures of this life? It seems that the Psalmist David found himself in such a position in Psalm 61. It is possible that he was away from home on an expedition at this time, or it may have been during the time of his son Absalom’s rebellion. No matter what the circumstances David knew that salvation was in God, and as he cries out to Him he uses four metaphors descriptive of God’s provision for His children. First he sees Him as a rock of strength and stability that was stronger and higher than himself; secondly he remembers that God has been a shelter or a place of refuge for him in the past, and there is no reason to even think He is anything different in this situation; remember “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble”, Psalm 46:1. Thirdly he remembers God as “A strong tower from the enemy”, not only was the tower fortified against the enemies attacks, but because of its height it elevated him high above the enemy. Always keep in mind that “the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly”, Romans 16:20. Then finally he views God like a bird, perhaps a great Eagle, or maybe just a mother Hen, but with outstretched wings under which her young would be protected from the predator, who could not get to them without first destroying her, and God will never be destroyed for “His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom” Daniel 7:27! And as a child of His you have the privilege of “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7.
My helper
By Rose Hill
Listen to me my God and Savior,
I cry to You for help and favor.
My heart is overwhelmed and weak,
For Your strong tower I now seek.
The enemy comes in on every side,
But under Your wings I now abide.
