The story of two houses (Parables of Jesus part nineteen)

In Matthew 7:24-27 and the parallel account of Luke 6:48-49 Jesus likens us to one of two houses, one built on a solid rock foundation, the other hastily, perhaps thoughtlessly, built on shifting sand. The first withstood the storm and the flood, while the second differing only in its foundation was destroyed by the same storm! The necessity that an enduring structure must have a solid foundation to which it is anchored is a known fact throughout the construction industry; and similarly our life, and most pronouncedly our spiritual life, must have a solid foundation to endure for eternity! The question today is to what is your life anchored? Is it hastily being built on the shifting sand of achievement, wealth, pleasure, fame, earthly possessions, present and self gratification, or other variables of this present world? These will not stand the test when “the rubber meets the road”! Or is it anchored to a sure and solid foundation? This is found only in the word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings! The Bible refers to Him as “a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation” Isaiah 28:16. Again He is “my God, and the rock of my salvation” Psalm 89:2, cf. 28:16. In Exodus 17:5-7 when the Israelites were in a place without water God instructed Moses to strike a certain rock and water came out of it for their sustenance. 1 Corinthians 10:4 confirms that that Rock was symbolic of Christ: He was smitten for us and from Him flows the sustenance of life; as we partake of Him we become anchored to that “sure foundation”! In Mark 4:24 He said “Take heed what you hear”, we must hear His words and do them!

The solid Rock

By Edmond Mote (Selected by Rose Hill)

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to veil His face,

I rest on His unchanging grace.

In every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.
