Psalm 23 (Part thirteen, Favor and consecration)

The next thing that Psalm 23:5 says of (and to) the shepherd is “You anoint my head with oil”, likely drawing from the practice of putting oil on the sheep to protect them from flies and other insects that could get into their eyes, ears, and nose. Aside from the sheep it was a custom to anoint the heads of celebrated guests at feasts that were given by great people, signifying favor. So here, like the shepherd with his flock, our shepherd anoints our head with the oil of His protection and favor as we sit at His banquet table reveling in this protection, joy, and prosperity, with “a future and a hope” in view, see Psalm 103:2-6; and Jeremiah 29:11. Know that He takes great delight in us His people; Isaiah 62:4-5 speaking to Israel and by extension to us through Christ Jesus, says “…For the Lord delights in you…And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, So shall your God rejoice over you.” There is also an oil of anointing in Scripture used in consecration–setting apart for a specific calling or service–such as Priests, Exodus 28:41; 30:30; and kings, 1 Samuel 15:1. This also has significance for us who are believers on Christ and are called and consecrated to be kings and priests unto God Revelation 1:6; and 5:10! But in the context of this Psalm David appears to be thinking about the favor of God with all its attendant benefits. God’s word through Jeremiah in 31:3 is this, “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love…” Wow, talk about favor, everlasting love! Jesus said “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” John 15:14. What a privilege and pleasure to be His friends, invited to His table where He pours the oil of His favor upon us!

Everlasting love

By Rose Hill

I love you with an everlasting love,

This is the promise from our Father above.

To rejoice over you is My delight,

To give you favor I think to be right.

For My children I have a great plan,

I will reward you for your service in the land.
