Psalm 23 (Part twelve, Hope)

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies…” verse 4. Picture a large table, perhaps at a family reunion, you find the place with your name and take your seat. The food is on the table in abundance, it is passed around family style and you dine on the bounty with the other members of the family. The Psalmist viewed God as the master of the feast who has provided this abundant banquet for the family, and has bidden each to “Come and dine” John 21:12 KJV. Jesus, through His redeeming work, has provided admission to this family table on which there is abundant provision for every need! To those under a heavy load there is rest, Matthew 11:28; to those who are troubled there is peace, Philippians 4:7; to those who are in bondage there is freedom, John 8:36; to those that are sick there is healing, Mark 6:56; to the weak there is power and strength, Isaiah 40:29; to those in need there is provision, Matthew 6:33; to the discouraged there is hope, Psalm 42:5, 11; 43:5, and the list continues on and on! And one thing that makes this extra special is where the table is set, “in the presence of my enemies”! To me that says we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to partake of this table because none of these enemies will be present in heaven! Oh yes, heaven will provide a place of perfection like we have never experienced, but as the “Holy Spirit of promise…is the guarantee of our inheritance” Ephesians 1:13-14 so those who have His seal are entitled to experience this guarantee and foretaste of that which is to come. Remember when a table is prepared and you have been invited, you have a right to eat that which is good, see Isaiah 55:2. When the enemy whispers the opposite into your ear to hold you in lack, bondage, and fear, resist him James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:9, knowing that he is a liar, John 8:44, and a thief John 10:10.

The family table

By Rose Hill

For His family the Lord prepared a table,

To take of what He has prepared we are able.

Even with enemies all around,

Victory at the table is found.
