“Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better” Hebrews 7:7. Here in Hebrews 7 we see Abraham, the man the Jewish people look to as their ancestral father, a man God chose out of heathen surroundings, obviously because his heart was open toward God, and thus with whom God could make covenant, and through whom the Jewish Nation was born and was to be a light in the world. Remember this covenant with Abram (later Abraham) was made four hundred thirty years before God made the covenant of law delivered through Moses. Unlike the covenant of law, this covenant was permanent; encompassing not only the Jewish Nation, but including all Nations to whom a Redeemer would be given through them, see Genesis 12:3; 22:18! We are given a glimpse into the faith and greatness of this man Abraham when he is called “the friend of God” in James 2:23, and yet with all this greatness we see his inferiority to Jesus when he meets Melchizedek, an Old Testament type of Jesus, holding both offices of priest and king as we are told in Genesis 14:18, a position no one except he and Jesus held; also his priesthood was permanent having no recorded beginning or end “but made like the Son of God remains a priest continually” Hebrews 7:3. Melchizedek blesses Abraham bringing out bread and wine comforting and refreshing him, some see this as being equivalent to a royal banquet, in Genesis 14:18-19, no doubt a picture of the blessing Jesus bestows upon His followers, the lesser being blessed by the better! Abraham received the covenant and the promises; Jesus is the fulfillment of them opening the door of faith and salvation to both Jews and Gentiles, by which “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” Genesis 22:18, cf. Galatians 3:8. Then Galatians 3:29 says “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Yes, Jesus is greater than Abraham, Will you commit your life Him today?

When in Christ you are a son,
To an earthly father you need not run.
Your faith in Jesus will open the door,
To salvation and much, much more.
