Jesus spoke to them again saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” John 8:12. The contrast is between the righteousness of God illuminating like the noonday sun, and the darkness of sin obscuring like the darkest midnight! The world – i.e. humankind – had been plunged into that darkness by their choice to ignore God’s command and serious warning in Genesis 2:9, 16-17. Now Jesus penetrated that darkness restoring the light of God to “as many as received Him” John 1:12. There is no excuse for His children to continue walking in darkness; Ephesians 5:8 says “you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” To every believer the Bible says, “You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness” 1 Thessalonians 5:5. We are now to live in that light as witnesses unto Him “without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world” Philippians 2:15. It was into those few early followers that Jesus instilled His light, and they along with their successors were set to be “the light of the world” Matthew 5:14; two verses later in verse 16 He said “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” this was His light which He had given them shining through them. It is our responsibility to take care that our words and our life, not just our words, are a clear reflection of Him because we are His representatives (witnesses); whether they accept or reject is their responsibility (see Mark 16:15), but ours is to keep shining the light!

Jesus is the light so bright,
So we need not walk in the night.
We receive of His light divine,
Then in this world we can shine.
Having plenty of light is such a blessing,
You can understand the truth you’re addressing.
