Living word

Jesus, Himself being the living manifestation of the word of God, John 1:1, said “The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life”, John 6:63. Today we are looking at the characteristics and life giving power of the word of God which is “living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit…” Hebrews 4:12. Hearing the word of God and responding positively to it produces the life of God within us, see John 5:24. Colossians 2:13 says “…you being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him…” God reanimates and conjointly joins us together with Christ the living word! Psalm 119 leans in heavily on the spoken and written word of God, which always points us to Jesus, using various terms to reference it, such as word, law, precepts, statutes, commandments, testimonies, and judgments. In verse 50 the Psalmist finds that it brings comfort and consolation in affliction (depression or misery); in the previous verse (49) he found it to be his source of hope while he waited with patience for it to be fulfilled; in verse 81 he experiences this hope even when God’s presence seemed to be far away! When heeded His word is a cleansing word, verse 9 says “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word”, (compare Ephesians 5:26). ” Then in verse 14 he found that walking in the way of God’s word brought him more joy than all the riches of this world that he could ever desire! Always remember that in Christ “all the promises of God…are yes, and in Him amen, to the glory of God through us” 2 Corinthians 1:20.

God’s living word

By Rose Hill

Your word is giving us comfort and peace,

And from our afflictions it quickens release.

Our lips shall pour forth praise and thanksgiving,

For Your word has given us abundant living.
