In introducing Jesus John 1:4 says “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” This shows us that in the original creation of Genesis 1 and 2 life came from God through Jesus. The life of the new creation in 2 Corinthians 5:17 also comes from God through Him; as the breath of God breathed life into man in Genesis 2:7, so Jesus breathes the new life of the Spirit into His followers in John 20:22 saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit”; in knowing Him we receive God’s eternal life, see 1 John 5:20 where the Greek word for life is Zoe, meaning the principle of life, not only physical but also spiritual; eternal life references both the duration and quality of life; we are blessed with grace for the present and glory for the future! Remember the words of Jesus in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” We were created for life but in Genesis 3 we (humanity) signed a contract with death in which Satan took us “captive…to do his will” 2 Timothy 2:26. It is for this reason that Jesus came to redeem us from that contract, and “…destroy him who had the power of death, that is the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” Hebrews 2:14-15. Hosea’s relationship with Gomer pictures God’s relationship with Israel, but it also pictures His relationship with us, fallen, separated, corrupted, but redeemed and restored, Hosea chapters 1-3. Jesus died our death so we could live His life both now and eternally; Oh Hallelujah! “…you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins” Ephesians 2:1, this is spiritual life. By believing on Jesus we are restored to “life in His name” John 20:31.
Jesus our life
By Rose Hill
We come to Jesus, who is our life,
And we are set free from sin and strife.
For we have the promise when a saint dies,
On Resurrection day we shall rise.
